Softball Salvages Split with Stan State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Stanislaus State at the CSUSB Softball Park on Saturday afternoon.

San Bernardino fell in game one by a 6-AC3 final, before prevailing 6-2 in game two.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 13-11 overall on the season and 10-7 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Stanislaus State 6, Cal State San Bernardino 3

Neither team touched home plate until Stan State broke the ice in the top of the fourth inning on a run-scoring single, but the Coyotes answered in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run over the left field fence from reigning CCAA Player of the Week Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.).

Stanislaus took the lead back on a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) tied the game on an RBI double, before she crossed home plate to give the Yotes a 3-2 lead on a Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) RBI single.

The Warriors plated four runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 6-3 victory.

Senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) was charged with the loss in the circle for CSUSB. She conceded four earned runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings with five strikeouts in the defeat.

Greene led the way offensively for the Coyotes, recording three of CSUSB's seven hits in the contest, as well as a stolen base.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 6, Stanislaus State 2

The Warriors struck first on a two-out solo home run in the top of the first, but Goris belted her second home run of the doubleheader, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the first inning.

The Yotes tacked on two more in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 advantage. Sophomore Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) notched an RBI double to right center, and later scored when Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) reach on error.

The score remained 4-1 for nearly the balance of the contest, until CSUSB added some insurance with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Moite recorded her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, and pinch runner Natalie Bednarz (Temecula, Calif.) scored on another Olson reach on error.

The Warriors threatened in the top of the seventh, but only crossed home plate once as the game ended 6-2.

Junior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) threw a complete game to earn her fifth victory of the season. She allowed just one earned run on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in the win.

CSUSB will travel to Stanislaus State for the Tournament of Champions. The Yotes will open the tournament on Friday afternoon with a 2 p.m. first pitch against Dominican.
