SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team won the first game of its series with Stanislaus State 7-4 Friday afternoon in CCAA action at the CSUSB Softball Park.
With the victory, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 12-10 overall on the season.
The game started as a defensive struggle, before both teams turned a corner offensively in the fourth. In the top of the frame, Stanislaus plated a pair of runs, but San Bernardino quickly rebounded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) got the rally started with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from senior Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.).
Catcher Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) gave the Coyotes the lead with a two-run single, following by a Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) RBI single and a Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) RBI fielder's choice.
Stan State got one back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double, but Greene's second RBI single in as many innings opened CSUSB's lead back up to four.
The Warriors mounted a brief rally with one run in the top of the seventh, but fell short by a final score of 7-4.
Greene and Tosi were the only two Coyotes to finish with multiple hits, while junior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) recorded CSUSB's first triple of the season.
Carlos earned the win for CSUSB, her third of the season. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in the victory.
The Coyotes and Warriors will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at CSUSB Softball Park. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 12 p.m.
