Baseball Opens Series with Victory over LA

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team earned a 10-5 CCAA victory over Cal State Los Angeles Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

With the win, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 10-11 overall on the season and 3-8 in CCAA action.

Cal State LA took the lead early with two runs on three hits in the top of the first, but the Coyotes answered right back.

In the bottom of the frame, CSUSB cut the deficit in half on a Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) lined homer over the left field wall, his third home run of the season.

The Yotes took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run, two-out double from Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.).

The Coyotes added two more with another two-out, two-run hit, a single from Macias to give the hosts a 5-2 lead.

After the Golden Eagles got one back in the top of the seventh on a solo home run, the Coyotes responded with five runs to take control of the contest. Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) belted a three-run home run in the inning, followed by a two-run shot from senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.).

LA tacked on two runs in the top of the eighth, but the comeback bid fell far short as the game ended with a 10-5 final.

Senior Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.) was credited with the win for CSUSB on the hill. He threw seven innings, allowing three earned on seven hits with six strikeouts. He improves to 3-2 overall on the season.

The Yotes scattered 13 hits in the win, with four coming off the bat of Macias. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. Garcia, Del Negro, and senior Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) each had a pair of hits.

The two teams will play games two and three of their series at Fiscalini Field on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
