Baseball Splits with Cal State LA

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Los Angeles at Fiscalini Field on Saturday afternoon.

San Bernardino won game one 11-7, before falling 6-4 in game two.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 11-12 overall on the season, and 4-9 in the CCAA.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 11, Cal State LA 7

The Coyotes struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when sophomore Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) scored on a Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.) reach on error.

Cal State LA briefly took the lead on a two-run single in the top of the third, but the Yotes responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run blast over the left field wall from designated hitter Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.).

The Yotes broke it open in the bottom of the fourth, plating four unearned runs to take a 7-2 lead. Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) got the scoring started with a two-run single to center, and a batter later, graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) drove in a pair with a wall ball double.

A Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) RBI single in the bottom of the fifth added to CSUSB's lead, putting the Yotes ahead 8-2.

Each team scored three times in the eighth inning, making the score 11-5. For the Yotes, junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) posted an RBI double in the frame, while Del Negro recorded an RBI sacrifice fly.

Cal State LA hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to give the game its final score of 11-7

The win was credited to freshman pitcher Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.), his first collegiate victory. He threw six innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Four Yotes recorded a pair of hits in the win, led by Shedlock, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Giesegh, Parker, and Gonzales also all had two hits.

Game 2 - Cal State LA 6, Cal State San Bernardino 4

A lead-off triple in the top of the first helped the Golden Eagles jump out to a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the first, designated hitter Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) connected with a 3-2 fastball for a no-doubt two-run homer to left, putting the Yotes on top 2-1.

Los Angeles rallied to take a 6-2 lead with one run in the third and four in the fourth before the Yotes made a comeback bid of their own. They plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) and an RBI single from Parker to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Yotes were unable to put together anything offensively in the final three innings, and the contest ended at 6-4.

Macias and senior Takuto Kataoka (Kobe, Japan) each posted a pair of hits for CSUSB in the defeat.

Sophomore Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) took the loss for Cal State San Bernardino. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits over three innings pitched. Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) looked stellar in relief, throwing four shutout innings while allowing just two hits.

The teams will wrap up their four-game set on Saturday afternoon with an 1 p.m. first pitch at Fiscalini Field.
