SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino baseball team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of San Francisco State University on Sunday afternoon in the finale of their four-game set at Maloney Field.
With the defeat, the Yotes fall to 8-6 overall on the season and 1-3 in the CCAA.
The Gators took early control of the contest by scoring once in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 advantage.
Cal State San Bernardino got on the board in the top of the fifth when junior
Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) reached on a two-out throwing error by the second baseman for the Gators. Senior
Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) scampered home from third on the play to cut the deficit to 3-1.Â
The San Bernardino offense would not strike again for the rest of the contest. San Francisco State scored once more in the bottom of the sixth for some insurance, but the Yotes would not answer as the game ended 4-1.
Senior catcher
Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) was the only Coyote with multiple hits. He recorded a pair of singles for CSUSB.Â
On the hill, the loss was credited to senior
Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.), who threw five innings and allowed three earned runs with seven strikeouts in the defeat.
Next up for CSUSB, they will open a series against Stanislaus State at Fiscalini Field on Friday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
