Baseball Swept by Stanislaus State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped both ends of a CCAA doubleheader with Stanislaus State on Friday at Fiscalini Field.

The Coyotes fell 13-11 in game one, before dropping game two 6-2.

With the split, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 8-8 overall on the season and 1-5 in CCAA action.

Game 1 - Stanislaus State 13, Cal State San Bernardino 11

Game one was a slugfest right from the jump, as the first inning featured five total runs. Stan State jumped in front first on a two-run shot, but in the bottom of the inning the Coyotes responded with three of their own. Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) started the CSUSB rally with a solo home run, and later in the inning Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) notched a pair of RBIs on a single through the right side.

Stanislaus took the lead back by posting two in the top of the second, before Garcia notched his second RBI in as many innings with a base hit to right, plating Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and tying the score at 4-4 at the end of two innings.

The Warriors would score the next eight runs of the game to take a 12-4 lead, but the Yotes would battle back. Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) started the comeback with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, and Garrett Macias (Iwakuna, Japan) and Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) each had RBIs in the seventh as the Yotes cut the deficit to 12-9.

Stan State scored once in the eighth to go ahead 13-9, followed in the bottom of the frame by a Garcia RBI infield single and a Mejia RBI fielder's choice to make the score 13-11.

The Yotes threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting two runners on with only one out, but could not push any runs across as the game ended with a 13-11 final.

Cal State San Bernardino had a pair of batters record four hits, with Garcia going 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, while Shedlock went 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Each player walked once to reach base safely five times.

Del Negro was 3-for-3 in the defeat, while Vanneste went 2-for-5.

Senior Matthew Henry (Fontana, Calif.) was charged with the loss, despite a relatively strong performance out of the bullpen. He threw three innings, allowing just one earned on three hits with three strikeouts in the defeat.

Game 2 - Stanislaus State 6, Cal State San Bernardino 2

The Warriors did all their offensive damage over the first three innings and never looked back to close out the sweep. Stan State's Chris Catalano recorded five RBIs split between a two-run double and a three-run homer to help lift the Warriors.

CSUSB its only damage of the contest offensively in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. The two runs were unearned, as Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) and Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) crossed home plate on an error by the Stanislaus left fielder.

The Coyotes managed only three hits off of Stanislaus State in the contest, with two off the bat of Parker.

The two teams will play game three of their series under the lights at Fiscalini Field on Saturday evening. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
