#11 Baseball Splits Doubleheader with SF State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a CCAA doubleheader with San Francisco State on Saturday at Maloney Field.

The Coyotes fell 5-4 in game one, before taking down the Gators 2-1 in game two.

With the split, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 8-5 overall on the season and 1-2 in CCAA action.

Game 1 - San Francisco State 5, Cal State San Bernardino 4

For the second game in a row, the Gators walked off on CSUSB after a late-inning comeback to open the afternoon.

The Yotes opened the scoring in the top of the first on a Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) RBI single, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge.

San Francisco State jumped in front with a three-spot in the bottom of the first, coming on an RBI single and a two-run homer.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the eighth, when the Coyotes made a comeback. They got within one on an RBI single from senior Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.), before Ben Davidson (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) drove in a pair on a single to center field, giving the Yotes a 4-3 lead.

The Gators quickly closed the gap with a run-scoring double play in the bottom of the eighth, and won on an RBI single in the ninth.

Dylan O'Connor (Tacoma, Wash.) got the start for the Coyotes on the hill, but registered a no-decision. He threw 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in the defeat.

Offensively, Garcia stayed hot for the Coyotes with a 3-for-4 performance. Junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was the only other Coyote with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 2, San Francisco State 1

The Yotes got all the offense they would need in the top of the second when senior Garrett Macias (Iwakuna, Japan) blasted a 2-1 fastball over the left field wall for a two-run home run. The dinger gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The only other run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, when the Gators got to within one on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

Sophomore Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) got the win for Cal State San Bernardino, throwing a complete game and allowing just the one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts.

San Bernardino managed just three hits in the win, including the Macias home run and a Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) double. Garcia stretched his hitting streak to eight games with a first inning single.

The two teams will play the final game of their weekend series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from San Francisco is slated for 12 p.m.
