Women's Basketball Falls to Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University women's basketball team suffered a 66-60 defeat at the hands of California State University East Bay Saturday evening in CCAA action inside Pioneer Gymnasium.

With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 12-12 overall on the season and 10-9 in the CCAA.

East Bay controlled the opening quarter, outscoring the Coyotes by a margin of 19-10. The Yotes knocked down only three shots in the period, and were paced by freshman Jaushlynn Ruffin (Lynwood, Calif.), who scored six points.

San Bernardino tightened things up by outscoring East Bay 17-13 in the second, but sill trailed 32-27 heading into the locker room. Playing in her hometown, senior Destiny Jackson (Hayward, Calif.) shot 4-of-5 for a team-high eight points in the second.

The Pioneers pulled away slightly in the third, outpacing the Coyotes 16-12 to take a nine-point lead into the fourth and final quarter. Six different Coyotes found the scoresheet in the quarter, led by Jackson with three points.

East Bay seemed to have the game fully in hand in the waning minutes of the contest, ahead by 16 at 62-46 with 4:22, but the Coyotes came roaring back to get to within three at 63-60 on a Citlali Salazar (Watts, Calif.) lay-in with 16 seconds remaining, but the visitors simply ran out of time. The Pioneers hit three free throws in the final seconds to close out the 66-60 victory.

Three Coyotes finished the contest in double figures in the defeat. Leading the way was Jackson, who posted 12 points, while Ruffin was close behind with 11 points. Senior Auren Isaacson (Chula Vista, Calif.) posted 10 points, while junior Olivia Lee (Peoria, Ariz.) had eight points and seven rebounds.

Next up for Cal State San Bernardino, they will play a vital 5:30 p.m. contest against Stanislaus State on Thursday evening at Coussoulis Arena.
