#10 Baseball Dominates Doubleheader Against Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The #10 California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Biola University Saturday afternoon at Eagle Diamond.

CSUSB took game one 13-2, before taking down the Eagles 9-1 in game two

With the victories, San Bernardino improves to 7-3 overall on the season.

Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 13, Biola 2

Senior Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) got the Coyotes on the board first in the top of the second inning with a long ball over the center field wall, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.

The game remained at 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when the Yotes tacked on two more to grab a 3-0 lead. Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the inning, followed by a Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) RBI single.

Junior Alec Bressler (Beaumont, Calif.) notched an RBI double in the sixth and senior Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) an RBI single in the seventh to put the Yotes up 5-0.

San Bernardino broke it open in the top of the eighth by posting eight runs to take a 13-0 lead. Garcia, Ruiz, Borst, Bressler, and sophomore Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) all recorded RBI singles in the frame.

Biola scored single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to end the shutout, but fell far short in their comeback bid.

Senior Luke Hempel (Glendale, Calif.) was stellar on the hill for the Yotes, throwing seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. He earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Garcia and Ruiz led the Coyotes offensively in the win, each going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Borst, Bressler, and junior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) each posted a pair of hits as well.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 9, Biola 1

Neither team scored in the first two innings, but the Coyotes exploded for six in the top of the third to break the game open.

Ruiz opened the scoring with a two-run single, before Vanneste delivered the day's biggest blow, a grand slam over the left field wall, putting CSUSB ahead 6-0.

Biola countered in the bottom of the third with their only run of the contest, a solo homer to left from AJ Ortiz.

Ruiz posted his third RBI of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a double to right center that put the Yotes ahead 7-1. One batter later, a Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) groundout plated Garcia to make it 8-1.

Del Negro capped off San Bernardino's victory with a RBI single in the top of the sixth, giving the game its final score of 9-1.

Ruiz was the only Coyote to post multiple hits in the win, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Del Negro, Garcia, and center fielder Takuto Kataoka (Kobe, Japan) all scored a pair of runs.

Sophomore Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) earned the win on the bump for the Yotes. He went five innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts to improve to 2-1.

Cal State San Bernardino will open conference play on the road next weekend with a four-game series at San Francisco State. Game one of the weekend series will be played on Friday at 2 p.m.
