Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino baseball team opened its four-game CCAA series with San Francisco State University with a 3-2 walk-off loss on Friday afternoon at Maloney Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 7-4 overall on the season and 0-1 in the CCAA.
The Gators got on the board first when an unearned run crossed the plate in the bottom of the first inning.
The score would remain 1-0 until the Gators doubled their lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, extending the advantage to 2-0.
CSUSB's offense finally came alive in the top of the eighth inning, knotting the score at 2-2. Graduate outfielder Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) got the Yotes on the board with an RBI groundout, before Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) tied the score with a two-out, run-scoring single to right center.
In the bottom of the ninth, San Francisco State ended the ballgame with a walk-off single up the middle, giving the Gators the win in the first game of the series.
Garcia went 3-for-3 with a walk to lead the Coyotes offensively. The rest of the team combined for just two hits on the afternoon.
Senior Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) continued his strong start to the season with another solid outing on the bump for CSUSB. In six innings pitched, he allowed no earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts, but was dealt a no-decision.
The two teams will play games two and three of their series at San Francisco State with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 11 a.m.
