SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #10 California State University San Bernardino baseball team fell 4-2 to Biola University Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Fiscalini Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 5-3 on the young season.
Biola built up an early lead with single runs in the first, third, and sixth innings before the Coyotes finally broke through in the bottom of the eight. With
Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) on first, graduate student
Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) belted a 1-0 pitch way over the left field fence for a two-run home run. The dinger cut the CSUSB deficit to just 3-2.
The Eagles got a clutch solo home run in the top of the ninth inning for some insurance. San Bernardino got runners on second and third with just one away in the bottom of the ninth, but could not drive them home.
Senior
Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) took the loss on the hill for the Yotes, throwing 6.1 innings with two earned runs allowed on eight hits while striking out three. Freshman
Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.) struck out three and allowed just one hit and one earned run.
Offensively, the only Coyote with multiple hits was senior
Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.). He went 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
The two teams will return to the field on Saturday for a doubleheader at Eagle Diamond. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 11 a.m.
