Women's Basketball Knocks Off Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team defeated the Cal State San Marcos Cougars by a score of 54-40 on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center.

With the win, the Coyotes improve to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in CCAA play.

CSUSB started strong, racing to a 9-0 lead. Senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) scored six points and added five rebounds in the first four minutes. Despite cooling off, the Yotes maintained a 13-7 lead entering the second quarter.

In the second quarter, San Marcos was able to erase the deficit, taking a 24-21 lead into the locker room. The Cougars also held a plus-six advantage on the boards at the break and went 3-for-7 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc in the second quarter.

The third quarter started slowly for the Coyotes, but their defense was strong, limiting San Marcos to just three points. After a 27-27 tie, CSUSB would end the quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by two buckets from graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.).

CSUSB continued to build on the success of the end of the third quarter as they outscored the Cougars 21-13 in the final frame. Graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the quarter.

Morris and Dufresne recorded 11 rebounds apiece in the victory. Dufresne added 10 points, marking the second time in the last three games that both players have recorded double-doubles in the same game.

For the game, four players recorded at least five rebounds. In addition to Dufresne and Morris, graduate student Tarryn Ross (Garden Grove, Calif.) and senior Rae McRae (Sacramento, Calif.) added nine and five boards, respectively.

CSUSB is off next week but will return to action on December 21 to face Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off at Kellogg Arena is slated for 1 p.m.
