POMONA, Calif. – The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to the #23 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos by a score of 60-50 on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.
With the loss, the Coyotes fall to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in CCAA play.
CSUSB got off to a strong start, taking an early 6-2 lead after a fast-break layup by freshman Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.), set up by a steal from Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.). However, the rest of the quarter slowed for the Coyotes, and the Broncos held a 17-11 lead entering the second quarter.
The second quarter was the Coyotes' best defensive effort, as they held Cal Poly Pomona to just nine points on 1-of-12 (8.3%) shooting. Offensively, graduate student Tarryn Ross (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored eight points, helping to trim the Broncos' lead to just three at halftime.
The Coyotes began the third quarter strong, scoring first with a layup by senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.). Dufresne would also add a game-high 14 rebounds. However, Cal Poly Pomona extended their lead to 10 points. Despite this, CSUSB kept the game within reach, scoring 10 points and forcing four turnovers. The Coyotes closed the quarter with a layup by senior Isabel Arango (Gardena, Calif.) to make the score 41-33 in favor of the Broncos.
The fourth quarter proved to be CSUSB's best offensive effort, as the Yotes scored 17 points. Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) recorded 11 of her career-high 19 points in the final frame, bringing the Coyotes to within four points and giving them a chance to take the lead. However, Cal Poly Pomona proved too strong, aided by a significant free-throw advantage, as the Broncos attempted 31 free throws compared to CSUSB's 13.
CSUSB will be off until 2025, when they face Cal State Los Angeles at Coussoulis Arena on Thursday, January 2. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
