Women's Basketball Sinks Biola

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team claimed a 63-60 victory over Biola University Saturday afternoon at the Conference Crossover at Coussoulis Arena.

With the victory, CSUSB grabs its first win of the season, improving to 1-1 overall.

The Coyotes held a narrow 18-17 lead at the end of one quarter. Senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) led the Coyotes with six first quarter points, while graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) had five points and three rebounds.

The second quarter was very low-scoring, with the Yotes outpacing Biola 10-9 behind four points each from Morris and junior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.). CSUSB took a narrow 28-26 lead into the locker room for halftime.

Biola outscored CSUSB 18-12 in the third quarter to take  a 44-40 lead to the final frame. The Yotes made only five field goals in the quarter, and was led by senior Isabel Arango (Gardena, Calif.) with four points.

The teams went back and forth in the final quarter, but finally it was senior Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) that provided the clutch shot. With 28 seconds remaining and the Coyotes down 60-58, Buckner hit a driving layup while she was hit to tie the game. She converted the impending free throw that proved to be the game-winning point. Morris iced the game seconds later by draining a pair of free throws.

Four Coyotes finished the contest in double figures, led by Dufresne with 14 points. Morris and graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) each had 11, while graduate student Tarryn Ross (Garden Grove, Calif.) had 10. Morris and Arango led CSUSB with seven boards each, while Jackson had a team-high six assists.

Former Coyote Sammie Henley, who played four seasons for the Coyotes before transferring to Biola for her graduate year, posted a game-high 20 points on 10-for-14 shooting in the defeat.

Next up for the Yotes, they will be off until Tuesday, November 19 when they travel to Santa Barbara to take on Westmont. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
