SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to the Warriors of Westmont College on Tuesday evening at Murchison Gymnasium, falling 70-66 in overtime. It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
In the first quarter, Westmont got off to a fast start, taking a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game. CSUSB got on the board with a three-pointer by graduate student Tarryn Ross (Garden Grove, Calif.). The Coyotes would eventually cut Westmont's lead to just one point by the end of the first quarter.
During the second quarter, history was made as Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) recorded her 113th career block, tying the CSUSB women's basketball all-time blocks record. Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) led the way in the first half for the Yotes, scoring eight points on 4-of-7 shooting. She led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, tying her career high.
The Coyotes picked up their offense in the second half. Junior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.) hit three three-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 14 points on the night. Westmont would enter the final frame with a 42-40 lead.
While Westmont held the lead for 39 minutes and 38 seconds, including overtime, CSUSB was never out of it, as the Warriors' largest lead of the night was just seven points. CSUSB scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, with the most consequential basket coming from graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.), who stole the ball off an inbounds pass and hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left to force overtime.
Westmont proved too much in the extra frame, taking the game 70-66. Despite the loss, CSUSB's 10 three-pointers were the most made in a game since February 25, 2023, when they also hit 10 against Stanislaus State.
Next, the Coyotes will return to Coussoulis Arena on Saturday for a game against Dominican (CA). Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
