SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team opened its 2024-25 season with an 83-75 loss to Concordia University Irvine at the Conference Crossover at Coussoulis Arena.
With the defeat, CSUSB opens its season at 0-1 overall.
The Coyotes trailed by a narrow 16-14 margin at the end of the first quarter, a frame that featured two ties and three lead changes. Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led CSUSB with six first-quarter points on 3-for-4 shooting.
Seven different Coyotes had points in the second quarter on 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) shooting, as the hosts rallied to tie the game at 40-40 at the break. Graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) had eight points and seven boards in the period, while Jackson had five points and three assists.
The Golden Eagles began to pull away in the third quarter, outpacing CSUSB by a margin of 28-15 to take a 68-55 advantage heading to the fourth. Forwards Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) and Morris accounted for all 15 Coyote points in the quarter, scoring nine and six respectively.
CSUSB was able to cut the deficit down to six in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Coyote comeback bid fell short in the end despite outscoring CUI 20-15 in the fourth. Dufresne led the Yotes with seven fourth quarter points.
Tied for the game high in scoring was Dufresne, who opened her season with a 20-point performance. Morris looked sharp in her Coyote debut as well, posting 16 points and 14 boards for a double-double, while Jackson finished with 14 points and seven assists.
Next up for the Yotes, they will wrap up the Conference Crossover Saturday afternoon against Biola at Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
