SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team knocked off #22 San Francisco State 3-0 Saturday evening in CCAA action at Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, and 25-22.
With the victory, CSUSB moves to 10-7 overall on the season, and 6-4 in conference play.
CSUSB prevailed in set number one, which featured 11 ties and three lead changes. Sophomore middle M'Kera Drake (San Bernardino, Calif.) was dazzling in the set, notching six kills on six attempts for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.
CSUSB went wire-to-wire in set two to push the Gators to the brink. The Yotes opened the set on a 10-1 run, capped by a service ace from sophomore Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.). CSUSB later led 21-10 in the set, before San Francisco State went on a furious 9-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to 22-19, but the gap proved too wide to overcome and the Coyotes took the set 25-21.
The Coyotes trailed for the majority of the third set, but rallied late to close out the sweep. San Francisco State led by as many as four in the early stages of the set at 7-3 and 8-4, but the Yotes finally took their first lead at 20-19 and never looked back. Drake capped the victory with her team-high 12th kill of the evening.
Drake's 12 kills came on just 17 attempts without an error on the night for an astounding .706 attack percentage. She also posted three assisted blocks in the win.
Pedersen had a strong outing offensively for the Coyotes. She finished with 11 kills and only one error, as well as a match-high four service aces.
Senior Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded nine kills in the victory for Cal State San Bernardino, and led all players with 12 digs.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will continue their homestand on Thursday with a crucial CCAA contest against #20 Cal State Los Angeles from Kim Cherniss Court. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
