HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's soccer team defeated the Cal State East Bay Pioneers at Pioneer Stadium on Sunday afternoon 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
With the win, CSUSB improves to 3-3-4 with a 2-1-1 mark in CCAA play.
The Coyotes had many opportunities early, with three shots on goal in the first five minutes and five in the first 20. Senior Alissa Torres (Eastvale, Calif.) had the first two, and both shots were from the lower left side.
East Bay would have a couple chances of their own, including an 89th minute opportunity that was saved by CSUSB goalkeeper Leila Peregrina (Chino, Calif.).
Just over a minute later, Coyote junior Bella Cervantes (Anaheim, Calif.) would score the game's only goal. A long ball over the top was misplayed by the Pioneer keeper and fell right to the foot of Cervantes, who buried the game-winner with just 30 seconds to play.
While the total shots were 9-8 in favor of the Coyotes, CSUSB held an 8-2 advantage in terms of shots on goal. Peregrina stopped the only two shots on goal she faced.
Next up, CSUSB comes back to Southern California for a road match against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
