YOTES DOWN TOROS IN OVERTIME, 87-81; JAIDA JACKSON, FRESHMAN RUFFIN LEAD CCAA WIN

CARSON – Cal State San Bernardino’s women’s basketball team evened its CCAA conference record at 3-3 with an 87-81 overtime victory Thursday night over the host Cal State Dominguez Hills that also ended the Toros seven-game win streak over the Yotes.

Jaida Jackson scored a season-high 19 points to go with four assists and five steals, including a steal and layup in the final second of overtime to seal the victory for the Yotes. Freshman Jaushlynn Ruffin had her best game of the season securing her first double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
            
Olivia Lee had a season-best 14 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks while Mia Dufresne contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Auren Isaacson, who played for the Toros in 2022-23, had nine points, four rebounds and two steals.
            
The Yotes shot 44 percent for the game (35 of 79), made 14 of 22 free throws (63 percent) and posted a game high 47 rebounds and 19 steals and four blocked shots.
            
The victory improved the team's overall record to 5-6 as the Yotes head for Cal State L.A. for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday against the Golden Eagles, who lost 65-52 Thursday night to Cal Poly Pomona.
            
The game also marked the return of the Yotes top scorer Destiny Jackson who came off the bench to score seven points in 18 minutes of action with two rebounds and two steals. She had missed the last two games with a hand injury suffered Dec. 9.
            
The teams wound up in a 73-73 tie after four quarters but it was the visiting Yotes who led in the game for 34 minutes while the Toros, the defending CCAA and NCAA West Regional champions, led for just shy of eight minutes.
            
Asia Jordan was the mainstay for the Toros, finishing with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 3:22 left in the five-minute overtime. Cristina Oliva had 17 points with four three-pointers, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Amaya Snowden had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Toros.
            
The Toros, with nine players returning from its 2022-23 championship team, shot 40 percent from the field, 85 percent from the foul line (17 of 20), collected 10 steals but made 23 turnovers.
            
Dominguez Hills is now 5-7 on the season and 2-4 in the CCAA. The Toros were missing Nala Williams, their leading scorer who earned NCAA Div. II Sports Information Directors (D2SIDA)  player of the week honors for her play in a win over Cal State L.A. on Dec. 30.
            
The Yotes had an early 14-12 lead in the first period before Olivia and Rebecca Penner nailed three-pointers to give the Toros an 18-14 lead.
            
Jaida Jackson quickly put the Yotes back in front with a three-pointer followed by a steal and layup for a 19-18 lead seven seconds into the second quarter. CSUSB achieved a six-point lead at 30-24 on a free throw by Isaacson 4:07 before halftime
            
After Dufresne's layup gave CSUSB a 32-27 advantage at the 2:59 mark, Snowden scored on a layup and Jordan hit a jumper off an assist by Snowden to narrow the margin to 32-31 at halftime. The Yotes led for 16:34 of the first 20 minutes.
            
CSUSB pulled out to a 42-37 lead on a Ruffin layup at 6:10 of the third period, but Joe'l Benoit's jumper and Olivia's three point play evened the score at 42. Seconds later Oliva hit a three-pointer for a 45-42 Toros lead after a steal by Jordan.
            
After Jaida Jackson's free throw, Isaacson nailed a three pointer for a 46-45 Yotes lead. Trailing 51-48 with 1:45 left in the period, Destiny Jackson sank a jump shot off an assist by Citali Salazar following a steal by Ruffin and Salazar hit a jumper with seven seconds left to give the Yotes a 52-51 heading to the fourth period.
            
Salazar kept it going with a steal and layup just seven seconds into the fourth quarter. CSUSB maintained the lead and opened up a six-point cushion on another Isaacson three-pointer for a 67-61 advantage with 4:33 left in regulation.
            
Dufresne meshed two free throws with 1:56 left for a 73-66 lead but the Toros battled back as Dufresne fouled out with 1:45 left. A Benoit free throw, a layup by Kylee Edgar after a steal by Benoit, followed by a jumper by Snowden off an assist by Jordan closed the gap to 73-71 with 54 seconds left.
            
Two missed shots by the Yotes led to Jordan's 11th rebound with 10 seconds left and six seconds later, Jordan scored on a layup to send the game into overtime at 73-73.
            
Lee immediately gave CSUSB a 77-73 lead in the first 1:12 of the overtime with a pair of jump shots. Hosanna Walker tied it at 77-all with 2:57 remaining and Benoit put the Toros up by two at 79-77 only to have Destiny Jackson knot the game at 79-all.
            
Lee's free throw and a Ruffin jumper put CSUSB up for good at 82-79 with 53 seconds left in overtime. The Toros Oliva made it 82-81 with 22 seconds left. Destiny Jackson's free throw made it 83-81 before Destiny stole the ball and Jaida Jackson's layup followed with one second left for an 85-81 advantage. Jaida Jackson then stole the inbounds pass from the Toros and scored for a six-point margin of victory 87-81.
            
It was the most points scored by a Yotes women's team in any game since CSUSB beat these same Toros 89-71 on Jan. 20, 2018 in Coussoulis Arena.
