Women's Basketball Knocks Off Dominguez Hills

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team erased an eight-point second half deficit and held on to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills by a final score of 74-61 Saturday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Coussoulis Arena.

With the victory, the Yotes improve to 8-10 overall on the season and 6-7 in the CCAA.

Both offenses got off to a quiet start in the first quarter, combining to hit just two of the game's first 22 shots from the floor. A low-scoring opening quarter came to a close with the Toros ahead 14-10, with Coyote senior Destiny Jackson (Hayward, Calif.) pouring in eight points.

Dominguez Hills narrowly outscored CSUSB 17-15 in the second quarter to carry a 31-25 lead into the locker room. Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Yotes with five points in the quarter, but seven second period rebounds from freshman Jaushlynn Ruffin (Lynwood, Calif.) saw her go to the break with 13 boards (seven offensive).

A 9-0 Coyote run, capped by an Auren Isaacson (Chula Vista, Calif.) three midway through the third quarter, gave the hosts a 40-39 their first lead since the score was 2-0, bringing the Coussoulis Arena crowd to life. The teams traded buckets in the final minutes of the period, and went to the fourth knotted at 45-45. Isaacson was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor in the third, including 2-for-2 from three, and led all players with eight points.

Threes from Samantha Henley (Ventura, Calif.) and Isaacson in the first 1:17 of the fourth helped San Bernardino start the quarter on an 8-2 run, opening up what was then their largest lead of the game at 53-47. The Coyotes would not look back after that, going on to put up 29 points in the fourth to run away with the 13-point win.

Destiny Jackson finished as the game's leading scorer, posting 20 points and five rebounds in the victory. She scored 11 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Yotes seal the win. Isaacson and Jaida Jackson scored 14 and 10 points for San Bernardino respectively.

Ruffin, who entered the game averaging 4.8 rebounds per game on the season, finished with 17 boards, shattering her career-high of 11 from January 4, also against Dominguez Hills. She finished just one point shy of a double-double with nine points.

The Yotes will return to action on Thursday evening with a trip to Sonoma State. Tip-off between the Coyotes and Seawolves is slated for 5:30 p.m.
