Women's Basketball Falls to Cal State LA

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to California State University Los Angeles 62-51 Thursday evening in CCAA action inside Coussoulis Arena.

With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 7-10 overall on the season and drop to 5-7 in the CCAA.

The Golden Eagles held a narrow 14-12 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter that featured three ties and six lead changes. Five different Coyotes had buckets in the first quarter, led by junior guard Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.), who scored four points.

Cal State LA took control in the second quarter, outpacing the hosts by a margin of 18-5 to carry a 32-17 lead into the break. The Yotes shot just 11.8 percent (2-for-17) in the period, with juniors Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) and Olivia Lee (Peoria, Ariz.) knocking down the only two baskets.

The Yotes chipped away at the lead in the second half by outscoring the Golden Eagles in both quarters. In the third, Jackson led all players with seven points, but her Coyotes still faced a 55-38 deficit heading to the fourth.

San Bernardino's full court press in the fourth quarter wreaked havoc on the Golden Eagles in the fourth quarter, as the Yotes forced 11 turnovers with eight steals in their comeback bid, but came up just short despite outscoring LA 19-16. Jackson and junior Samantha Henley (Ventura, Calif.) each had four steals in the fourth, while Dufresne notched eight points.

Dufresne finished as the leading scorer for the hosts, notching 14 points, but posted an enormous 15 rebounds – including 10 offensive – to lead all players. Jackson also finished in double figures, posting 13 points.

Next up for the Yotes, they will host Cal State Dominguez Hills at Coussoulis Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
