Women's Basketball Glides Past Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team took down Cal State Monterey Bay by a final score of 78-55 Thursday evening in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at The Kelp Bed.

With the victory, the Yotes improve to 7-8 overall on the season and move to .500 in the CCAA at 5-5.

The Yotes dominated the opening quarter, outscoring the hosts 24-16 to jump out to the early lead. Guard Destiny Jackson (Hayward, Calif.) was the quarter's leading scorer, dropping seven points, including a buzzer-beating pull-up jumper to end the period.

San Bernardino allowed just two Monterey Bay field goals in the second quarter as the Yotes continued to pull away. Meanwhile, seven different players scored in the second for the visitors, who carried a 41-21 lead into the locker room.

The teams went back and forth in a high-scoring third quarter, but it was the Yotes who held a narrow 22-21 edge on the scoreboard to head to the fourth ahead by 21. Jackson again led the way for San Bernardino with six points in the quarter.

The Yotes closed out the convincing win by outpacing the Otters 15-13 in the final frame to earn the 78-55 win. Samantha Henley (Ventura, Calif.) knocked down a trio of fourth quarter triples to help seal the victory.

Henley finished as the game's leading scorer for the Yotes, dropping 16 points in the victory. She shot a stellar 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Jackson was close behind with 15 points, while forward Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) scored 10 points in just 16 minutes of action.

San Bernardino held a heavy advantage in rebounding in the win, besting Monterey Bay by a margin of 51-37. The Yotes also shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the floor to just 27.5 percent (19-of-69) from the Otters.

The Yotes will continue their road trip on Saturday afternoon at Stanislaus State. Tip-off from Turlock between the Coyotes and Warriors is slated for 1 p.m.
