ROHNERT PARK, Calif. –
Victor Chavez scored the match-winning goal Friday as Cal State San Bernardino's men's soccer team opened CCAA conference play with a 1-0 shutout of host Sonoma State.
Aiden Hanes recorded the shutout in goal aided by five saves of Seawolves shots on target as the Yotes improved to 4-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA. Sonoma State dropped to 2-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
It was the Yotes' fifth win in their last eight conference openers and improved their record against the Seawolves to 8-8-1 since the 2006 season.
The current coaches and players may not know it, but Sonoma State under veteran head coach Marcus Ziemer, now in his 34
th season, was the dominant team in the CCAA for many years, earning eight CCAA titles, 15 NCAA appearances and an NCAA championship in 2002.
During that reign, the Yotes were 0-16-1 from 1993 to 2012 when they finally picked up win against the Seawolves. CSUSB has won four of the last five meetings.
Chavez, the Santa Barbara City College transfer, scored off the assist from
Jonathan Mayen, a transfer from Division 1 University of Illinois-Chicago.
Both men had re-entered the game at the start of the second half after subbing out in the first half.
It was Hanes first shutout of the season but credit is due the backline of the Yotes defense. In all, Hanes faced 12 shot attempts by SSU. Last season, Hanes was credited with 5 shutouts and produced a 0.94 goals against average in 14 matches.
