ARCATA. Calif. – Midfielder
Tony Negrete scored two goals – the second one proving to be the match-winner Sunday – as Cal State San Bernardino defeated host Cal Poly Humboldt, 3-2 to complete a two-match sweep of Northern California foes.
The Yotes improved to 5-1-2 on the season and 2-0 in the CCAA conference while the Lumberjacks are now 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.
The victory was CSUSB's ninth straight win over Humboldt dating back to 2013. During the streak, the Yotes have outscored their opponent 23-5. The Yotes now lead the all-time series 13-3. On Friday, the Yotes edged Sonoma State 1-0.
After the Yotes took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a
Nicklaus Sullivan's third goal of the season.
Jonathan Mayen, a senior transfer from University of Illinois-Chicago, provided his team-leading fifth assist of the season. With the goal, Sullivan moved to 2nd in the CCAA for points and Mayen moved to 2nd in the CCAA for assists.
Negrete, a junior transfer from Cerritos College in Norwalk, knocked in his first goal in the 58
th minute of second half with an assist from
Brian Castillo, his first of the season for a 2-0 Yotes lead. The score came just after Castillo's own shot on goal was saved by Lumberjack goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo.
The next 19 minutes produced two goals by the host Lumberjacks. Humboldt's Cooper Stephens scored his first goal of the season in the 66
th minutes to make it 2-1 with an assist by Konnor Rowan. Juan Perez then scored the equalizer on an assist by Stephens to tie the score.
Eight minutes later, Negrete nailed his match-winner in the 74
th minute, assisted by
Adrian Aguilar.
During this 19 minute span, three shots on goal by the Yotes were denied by Gallardo the keeper. CSUSB goalkeeper
Aiden Hanes, a redshirt junior from Riverside via San Diego State, stopped two other Humboldt tries, the last coming at 77:38 when Perez shot was grabbed by Hanes.
In the 90-minute match, Hanes saved four shots on goal and faced 11 others for CSUSB. Humboldt's Gallardo faced nine Yotes shot and saved five scoring attempts.
