YOTES OPEN 2023 CCAA VOLLEYBALL SEASON WITH 3-0 LOSS TO SONOMA ST.

For the first time since 2015, Cal State San Bernardino’s women’s volleyball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a loss, a 3-0 sweep at the hands of host Sonoma State.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – For the first time since 2015, Cal State San Bernardino's women's volleyball team opened the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule with a loss, a 3-0 sweep at the hands of host Sonoma State.

The last time the Yotes lost a conference opener was a 3-0 shutout by then CCAA member UC San Diego, at home on Sept. 15, 2015.

The loss was also CSUSB's third in a row to the Seawolves who trail in the all-time series 42-14 but have taken five of the last 11 meetings between the two teams. The AVCA 10th-ranked Yotes dropped to 7-2 on the season while unranked SSU extended its season win streak to five.

CSUSB's only other loss this season was in the same gym to tournament host Sonoma State, a 3-2 decision, on Sept. 8. The Yotes take a 7-2 record (0-1 CCAA) into Saturday night's contest at Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata.

Head Coach Kim Cherniss' team seemed headed to an opening set victory Thursday night, taking a 23-15 lead and needing two points to take the set. However, SSU rallied with 10 straight points to take the set 25-23.

The Yotes moved ahead 13-9 in the second set only to have Sonoma rally back and then hang on for a 25-22 win. Sonoma prevailed in the third set 25-22 that featured six lead changes.

CSUSB was partially undone by 11 service errors and 10 reception errors to go with two blocking errors. On the attack, though, the Yotes only had nine attack errors in 79 attempts while hitting .228 for the match.

Individually, Trinity Sheridan led the Yotes with 10 kills on .280 hitting. Savannah Hofmann posted eight kills on .300 hitting with six digs and two block assists. Jenna Patton and Taryn King each had a solo block and four block assists as CSUSB out pointed SSU on the block with 19 total blocks to just eight for the Seawolves.
