CARY, NC – The CSUSB baseball team defeated Rollins College by a score of 16-11 on Thursday afternoon, forcing a semifinal elimination game against Rollins on Friday. Â
The Yotes' offense got back to their slugging ways, racking up 15 hits en route to the win. In the bottom of the third inning,
Jason Shedlock broke a 2-2 tie with a 370-foot solo home run to right field. That was his second long ball of the season and put the Yotes up 3-2 – giving them a lead they would hang on to for the rest of the game. Shedlock's home run also had greater importance, as it was the Yotes' 84
th home run of the season, tying the 1997 team for the most in a single year.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, the game remained close at 5-4 in favor of CSUSB. After two batters got on by a walk and a hit by pitch,
Danny Garcia unloaded on a ball to right center field for a 382-foot home run. This swing not only gave the Yotes critical separation from the Tars, but it also broke the school home run record with number 85 on the season. The 2023 Yotes have now officially broken 31 school records this season, ranging from most wins, to most home runs, to most strikeouts on the mound.
Â
The top of the lineup came up big, with Shedlock,
DeShawn Johnson,
Daryl Ruiz, and
Giovanni Del Negro each collecting multiple hits. Garcia and
Garrett Macias led the team in RBI, driving in five and three respectively. Ruiz now has an absurd eight walks in 20 plate appearances in North Carolina, bringing his season total to 49 to tie the single season school record. Ruiz already owns the all-time walk record for CSUSB, having 88 in his career.
Â
Josh Sandoval started the game for CSUSB, delivering three strong innings to give CSUSB a chance.
Benny Olguin then ate up the middle innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 5.0 innings out of the pen. Olguin earned the win, improving to a perfect 8-0 on the season.
Â
Despite a ninth inning scare that saw Rollins score five runs, the Yotes were able to close the door for a final score of 16-11 and pick up their third win in the College World Series.
