CARY, NC – The CSUSB baseball team concluded its historic run at the DII College World Series on Friday, falling to Rollins College in the national semifinals by a score of 8-10. The 2023 team has cemented themselves as the greatest team in program history, collecting a program best 46 wins while breaking 31 school records. In their first time ever making the NCAA Tournament in their 32-year Division II history, the Yotes came just one game short of playing for a national title.
The Yotes finished the NCAA Tournament with a record of 8-2, with both losses coming to Rollins in the College World Series. After scoring 16 runs on Thursday against the Tars, the Yotes plated eight more on Friday. However, Rollins was able to push across 10 runs on 14 hits, advancing to the national championship game.
Senior
DeShawn Johnson collected his eighth three-hit game of the season, bringing his season total to a remarkable 101 hits. This not only broke the CSUSB single-season record (84), but also leads ALL of the Division II this season. Johnson also scored four runs, ranking second in the nation with 88 on the season.
DeShawn wasn't the only Yote to be ranked #1 in a statistical category this season, as closer
Oscar Rauda finished with 14 saves. This ranks second in a single season in CSUSB history and is tied for the most in the nation in 2023.
The game against Rollins went back and forth, with five lead changes taking place. Down by only one run in the eighth, the Yotes looked to make yet another comeback. However, Rollins delivered the final blow on a two-run home run, making the score 10-7. CSUSB would push across one final run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to keep the magical season alive.
The 2023 team absolutely destroyed the CSUSB baseball record book, breaking 31 school records (which is probably a record in and of itself). Below is a list of records broken:
