No. 21 Falls to Yotes

SAN MARCOS, CA – The Yotes took all four games off the No. 21 ranked Cougars of San Marcos this past weekend. This gives the team eight wins over ranked opponents this season and the first series sweep of a ranked opponent!

Game 1: CSUSB 2, CSUSM 1

In the opening game of the series, the No. 21 ranked Cougars put themselves ahead after a double, an error and a single allowed them to bring in a run. The Yotes would remain scoreless through four innings. A sac bunt by Ariana Chavarria advanced Brooke Brazill into scoring position. A walk and a single would load the bases for the Yotes. Alexis Aguado laid down her first double of the season down the right field line after being down 0-2 in the count. Kyla Lowman ad Brazill both came in to score the winning runs for the Yotes.

Samantha Vargas improved to 15-9 after pitching the full seven innings. She recorded three strikeouts, four hits and one run in her appearance in the circle.

Game 2: CSUSB 6, CSUSM 1

The second game of the doubleheader was scoreless into the fourth inning for both squads. A groundout by Bailey Wallace allowed Alyssa Martinez to score and end the drought for the Yotes. Hayden Greene took the first pitch she saw and singled through the left side. The junior would advance to scoring position on a wild pitch and then third on a bunt by Aguado.

The bases were once again loaded for the Yotes after a four-pitch walk to Tereise Tosi. A double by Kaylee Williamson brought Aguado and Greene in to score to give the Yotes the 3-0 lead. Martinez singled and advanced to second on the throw, earning 2 RBIs as Lowman and Tosi came across home plate. Martinez would tack on the final run for the Yotes on a fielder's choice for the final score of 6-1.

Game 3: CSUSB 2, CSUSM 1

Much like game one, the Cougars jumped out to an early one-point lead over the Yotes. They held the lead going into the sixth inning until Shannon Galliano scored to tie the game. The Yotes would the the lead when Greene scored on a groundout to second base.

Natalie Carlos was in the circle for the Yotes, improving her record this season to 6-2. She faced 30 batters and only allowed five hits after dishing out just over 100 in her six innings. Vargas was credited with the save, her second of the season.

Game 4: CSUSB 6, CSUSM 2

Martinez got on base in the second for the Yotes with a single up the middle. She would advance into scoring position after Chavarria reached first on a fielder's choice. Both runners came in to score with a double by Veronica Garza to give the Yotes the lead.

They added three more runs to their total in the very next inning with a two-run homerun by Tosi and a single through the right side to bring Martinez in. The Cougars avoided the shutout after laying down a triple to bring one runner in to score.

The final run of the weekend for the Yotes came on a 1- homerun to center field by Tosi. The sophomore now has eight homeruns on the season, leading both her team and the entire CCAA.
