SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Yotes continue their tear through nationally ranked teams, taking two games off the #19 Seawolves of Sonoma State. In their second weekend at home, they put up 31 hits throughout the four-game series, the most they've had in a series so far this season.
Game 1: CSUSB 6, SSU 5
In a scoreless game, a
Kaylee Williamson double would put the Yotes up 2-0 in the second inning and giving her two RBIs.
Veronica Garza, a senior from Buena Park earned an RBI on a single to right field after being down 0-2 at the plate. The Yotes weren't finished with their offensive push and put three more runs on the board with a three-run homer from
Hayden Greene. The junior from El Dorado Hills now has two homeruns on the season, putting her in second place for the most this season.
The Yotes wouldn't put any more points up but played steadily on the defensive end. Two consecutive homers by the Seawolves put them right back in the game in the top of the sixth and brought the score to 6-5. The Seawolves had the Yotes on their toes but couldn't respond offensively.
Samantha Vargas recorded a season-high seven K's in her five innings pitched. She now has 44 strikeouts in her 17 appearances this season.
Natalie Carlos was credited with the save, her first of the season.
Game 2: CSUSB 2, SSU 12
The Seawolves scored 10 unanswered points through three innings in the second game of the doubleheader.
Tereise Tosi scored the first run for the Yotes with a single homer to left field in the bottom of the fourth. A flyout from
Brooke Brazill gave her an RBI and brought
Alyssa Martinez in to score.
Sonoma State brought two more runs across the plate and would end the game.
Natalie Carlos was given the loss, her first of the season, after allowing three runs on two hits.
Game 3: CSUSB 7, SSU 0
Hayden Greene started the game in a battle at the plate. In a nine-pitch appearance, Greene was walked before advancing to third on a double from
Alyssa Rodriguez. Rodriguez would be thrown out at home plate in an attempt to steal and extend their lead.
Alyssa Martinez would record the final out for the inning, but it wasn't a long outing for the Seawolves.
Samantha Vargas struck out the side to put the Yotes back on the offensive.
Williamson and Garza both got on base. Williamson would come in to score on a passed ball, but Garza was left on base on a foul out by Greene.
Tereise Tosi singled down the left field line, but would make her way to third after a wild pitch and a passed ball with Martinez at the plate. Earning herself an RBI, Martinez singled to third base and brought Tosi in to put another point up. A pair of singles would bring Martinez in to score and back at the top of the lineup, Williamson would continue the scoring rally with a double of her own to bring Wallace across the plate and put the Yotes up 5-0. Greene would make her way across home in the fourth and Williamson would make her way home in the fifth to score the final two points of the ballgame.
Samantha Vargas pitched another shutout game, making this her third shutout against ranked opponents. She only gave up three hits in her 100-pitch win, improving her record to 8-5 on the season.
Game 4: CSUSB 0, SSU 3
Sonoma State would score all of their runs in the second inning, a two-run homer starting them off and a walk with the bases loaded giving them all three of their points. The Yotes were outlasted from the offensive side during the entirety of the game, and left five runners on base.
Samantha Vargas and
Natalie Carlos would pitch a total of 105 pitches in the circle. They struck out a combined five batters with Vargas allowing all three runs to score, giving her the 0-3 loss.
