Box Score ARCATA – Playing conference teams on the road is always a tough challenge, especially for the visitor and Cal State San Bernardino's women's basketball team found that out Saturday night in a 49-48 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt.
After leading the Lady Lumberjacks for the first 25 minutes of the game, the Yotes found themselves down by six points after three periods, but battled back to tie the game at 46-all on a three-pointer by
Auren Isaacson with 2:30 remaining in the game.
CSUSB took a 48-46 lead with 38 seconds left when
Deja Blue sank two free throws after being fouled by the 'Jacks leading scorer Emilia Long. Seven seconds later Long evened the score at 48 with a jumper.
With 11 seconds remaining Isaacson missed a jumper and Sara Ahmadpour rebounded for Humboldt and as time expired Long was fouled by CSUSB freshman
Jaushlynn Ruffin. Long went to the foul line and sank one of two free throws for the victory.
The victory improved the 'Jacks to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in the CCAA after their win over Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday night. CSUSB is now 2-4 overall, 0-2 in the CCAA after losing its conference opener at Chico State on Thursday 82-73.
Destiny Jackson led the Yotes with 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals in 39 minutes. Blue had seven points, four rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot in 18 minutes. Jaida Jackon scored six points with eight rebounds.
Samantha Henley added six points and six rebounds with one steal in 34 minutes.
Both teams were active on defense in the game. CSUSB made eight steals and three blocked shots and outrebounded Humboldt 37-34. The 'Jacks racked up 11 steals, six by Long who played the entire 40 minutes.
In addition to her steals, Long paced the 'Jacks with 16 points, three rebounds and a blocked shot. Kenya Edelhart finished with 10 points, was 6 for 6 from the foul line and gathered eight rebounds in 34 minutes. Sara Ahmadpour contributed eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists in 32 minutes for Humboldt.
The relatively low-scoring game was made possible by poor shooting by both teams at times. CSUSB shot 29 percent from the field and Humboldt 31.6 percent. The teams combined for 45 turnovers (22 by CSUSB).
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Yotes against the 'Jacks. Humboldt has a 6-5 edge over their last 11 meetings.
