ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The CSUSB women's soccer team took three huge point on the road in a win over the Sonoma Seawolves on Friday afternoon with a score of 1-0. The Yotes now hold a 4-3-1 record, with a 1-0-0 record in conference.
The Yotes have a 5-24-3 record against this strong CCAA opponent. With this win, the Yotes break a losing streak that dates back to 2015 against the Sonoma Seawolves.
The game was a battle from the start, with eight total shots in the first half. The Seawolves recorded 2 early shots before the Yotes took the next two. Both
Nathaly Losada Lucumi and
Alondra Toledo took quality shots on target that forced saves out of the Seawolves' goalkeeper.
Leila Peregrina's only save of the game came in the 35
th minute of the game, where she dove to stop the Seawolves from taking the lead in the first half.
In the second half, the game continued as a back and forth, with both the Yotes and the Seawolves taking shots that couldn't find the back of the net.
After last week's late comeback against Azusa Pacific, there was no doubt that the Yotes could pull off a late win again.
The game finally turned in the Yotes favor in the 77
th minute. Midfielder and captain
Sam Smith was carrying the ball forward in the Seawolves half before picking out to
Unieque Solis on the top of the box. Solis controlled and took a touch forward before lacing the ball into the top left corner of the goal, scoring the goal the Yotes needed in the final minutes of the game. With the goal, Solis picked up her second goal of the 2023 season, and
Sam Smith picked up her first assist.
The Yotes defensive efforts as a team, stifled the Seawolves attack for the rest of the game, not allowing another shot from their offense.
