SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CCAA conference's leading scorer drilled his second goal of the match Friday, enabling Stanislaus State to avoid defeat and gain a 2-2 tie with Cal State San Bernardino before 56 fans at Premier Field.
The Yotes dominated the match, played in 100-degree heat, limiting a Warriors team that ranks at the top of the CCAA in terms of total shots attempted and shots on goal to just three shots in 90 minutes.
Two of those shots were unassisted goals by sophomore Tyler Tipton, one in the first half to give Stanislaus a 1-0 lead at halftime and the other just 1:30 from the end of the match after the Yotes had taken a 2-1 lead in the 68
th minute of the 90-minute match. Tipton leads the CCAA with nine goals.
CSUSB, ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division II, will take a 5-1-3 record (2-0-1) into Sunday's home match at 2 p.m against Chico State, ranked No. 2 in Division II. The Wildcats were 8-0-1, 1-0-1 in CCAA play entering Friday night's match at 9
th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. Stanislaus is now 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the CCAA.
Like Tipton, the Yotes'
Jonathan Mayen scored both goals for the home side without benefit of an assist. Mayen converted a penalty kick in 67
th minute after a yellow card foul by Warriors goalkeeper Robby Rosas.
Thirty-eight seconds later, a shot on goal by CSUSB's Robert Castillo was blocked but Mayen collected the rebound and scored at 67:35 for a 2-1 Yotes advantage. Mayen now has three goals on the season and his five assists this season rank No. 2 in the CCAA.
While
Aiden Hanes, the Yotes' goalkeeper, tried unsuccessfully to stop Tipton's two goals he was just a spectator most of the match as the visitors tried only one more shot the entire match, finishing with no saves.
Rosas, on the other hand, was busy saving four shots on goal in the first half and three more in the second half to run his season total to 60 saves in nine matches compared to just 15 for Hanes in six of his team's nine matches.
Nicklaus Sullivan totaled seven shots in the match, four of them on goal. Mayen had three shots on goal and made two of them count.
