Yotes Win Two Against the Lumberjacks

CSUSB traveled to Arcata to take on Cal Poly Humboldt.

ARCATA, Calif. – Yotes traveled to Arcata to take on the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks. In both games CSUSB was on target collecting four home runs on the day. The Yotes capitalized on day one of the series sweeping the Lumberjacks, 2-0.

The lead pitcher for game one of the doubleheader was Brooklyn Blackmon who pitched a complete game collecting eight strikeouts on the game. The Yotes were first on the board as they scored three runs in the first inning. Bailey Wallace hit a home run for a three RBI. In the second inning CSUSB scored four runs to take a significant lead against the Lumberjacks. Teriese Tosi hit a home run in the second inning for a two RBI. The Yotes kept Cal Poly Humboldt scoreless for the remainder of the game, winning 9-1.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Samantha Vargas pitched for five innings collecting five strikeouts on 69 pitches. It would be a game that almost mirrored the first. Tosi hit her second home run of the day in the third inning for a two RBI. Alyssa Martinez also homered in the third inning. Veronica Garza connected for three hits and one RBI on the game. The Yotes won the second game, 9-5.

"Our offense today set the tone right away for us game in both games" said coach Dee Payan. "Our goal this week has been to hit with 100% confidence, pass the bat, and do anything you can to help the team win. We did just that and trusted our plan and approach at the plate"

"Tosi was unreal for us at the plate" coach Payan continued. "She squared up on almost every ball she hit. She ended the day 6-8 with two home runs and six RBI's. Our pitching staff did well. Brooke Blackmon was able to shut down Humboldt's offense and throw her sixth complete game of the year. Sam Vargas came in relief in the third and held it down for us. She was spinning and locating her pitches really. We are playing some good softball and looking to carry this momentum into tomorrow."

CSUSB continues their series against Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday, April 16th with first pitch at 11 a.m. in Arcata for another doubleheader. Streaming is available on the ccaanetwork.com.
