TURLOCK, Calif. - The CSUSB Men's Golf team headed up north to compete at the Harry Stanislaus Invitational. Fifteen teams, including all eleven ranked in the West Region and eight CCAA teams, participated at the Turlock Golf Course and Country Club course, hosted by Stanislaus State. Entering the tournament, CSUSB earned runner-up status in its previous two meets.
Although the Yotes didn't finish as well as the last two tournaments, the West Region's No. 2 Men's Golf team put in a strong effort. Brian Nielsen, Mark Williams, David Marris, and Randy Vergel de Dios recorded twelve birdies apiece, and the Yotes' 54 birdies led the tournament.
However, while they led in birdies, the field proved too dominant as teams such as the West Region's No. 1 Western Washington and host Stanislaus State showed more consistency. CSUSB shot 29 over par as a team, 27 strokes behind the lead. Brian Nielsen led the way for the Yotes, shooting +4 for the tournament.
Next week, the Yotes head to Goodyear, Arizona, to participate in the Palm Valley Classic hosted by Western New Mexico, their final tournament before the CCAA Championships in Brooks, California, the following week. Despite this week's finish, a strong stretch run should place the Yotes in the West regional field. Live stats for golf tournaments can be seen via Golfstat.
