ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - After winning their first away game against Humboldt State, the Yotes took on Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. Heading into the game CSUSB held an overall record of 11-12 against the Seawolves. The Yotes caught up to within three points behind Sonoma State but was unable to catch them in time. The Seawolves took the win, 64-57.
Sonoma State outscored the Yotes in the first creating a lead of 14 points going into halftime. CSUSB shot a lower than usual, 23.1% in field goals and only took four three-point attempts in the first half. The Yotes were able to grab 16 boards in the first half, but the Seawolves collected 21 rebounds. At the end of the second quarter CSUSB was down, 34-20.
In the third quarter the Yotes outplayed Sonoma State in all aspects of the game. CSUSB collected 10 rebounds against the Seawolves seven. The Yotes increase their field goal percentage to 58.3% on the quarter. CSUSB also outscored Sonoma State, closing the score gap to only five points, 44-39.
The Yotes continued to race back into the game in the fourth quarter. CSUSB shot 83.3% from the free-throw line and 42.9% in field goals. The Seawolves out rebounded the Yotes 10 boards to six. With one minute left in the game,
Destiny Jackson hit a layup that brought CSUSB within three points of Sonoma State, 56-53.
With limited time on the clock, the Yotes went to foul the Seawolves hoping to catch them on a few missed free-throws. Although a great drawn-out plan, Sonoma State did not miss and sealed the victory, 64-57.
"This was a tough way to end a road trip" said coach
Casandra Renno. "We battlled for 40 minutes straight, but came up short in the end."
Leading the Yotes in scoring was Jackson who nailed 13 points, had four steals, and two blocks.
Mia Finnie scored in double digits, hitting 12 points, and had two rebounds.
Jaida Jackson added 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Tatianna Russell led CSUSB in rebounds collected eight boards, and had two blocks and one assist.
CSUSB is scheduled to play their next game on Thursday, January 20
