ROHNERT PARK – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes opened the 2019 CCAA season with a 3-1 win on the road at Sonoma State on Thursday night.
The Yotes took the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-17, and finished it off in set four, 25-23. Alexis Cardoza led CSUSB with 10 kills, as Sascha Dominique and Moira Murphy added six each. Mehana Ma'a led the offense with 17 assists.
"We are very happy to get our first conference win under our belt," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "Sonoma is always a very tough opponent, especially at their place. They defended at a higher level than anyone we have faced thus far and pushed us to play extended rallies and be proficient offensively to come away with this win. Both of our freshman setters did a great job tonight executing the game plan. They showed great composure and competitiveness in their setting choices. It was also nice to see our opposite attackers, Mikaela Grove and Moira Murphy have a good night, as they blocked some great balls and got some critical kills for us."
Grove had four kills, hitting .333 and Murphy hit .308. As a team the Yotes hit .223, held Sonoma State to .157, as CSUSB only committed 11 errors.
The Yotes will wrap the road trip on Saturday night at Humboldt State at 7 pm. Live links are on CSUSBathletics.com.
