SAN BERNARDINO – The No. 2 CSUSB Coyotes opened the D2 West Region Showcase at home with a 3-0 sweep of Simon Fraser and Alaska Anchorage.
Against Simon Fraser, the Yotes cruised in sets one and three, taking them 25-19 and 25-15, and fought back in set two to grab that one 25-23. Alexis Cardoza had eight kills with Moira Murphy and Stephanie Doak getting six each. The Yotes dominated at the net, leading in blocks 10-5 with Jalyn Hayes sending seven back and Mikaela Grove getting six. Cardoza led in digs with 10 and added three blocks.
The Yotes hit .243 and held SFU to .102 with five aces, four from Asia Clarke.
In the second match, the Yotes controlled all three sets, 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18. Cardoza picked up a season-high 20 kills and Sascha Dominique added eight. The offense was clicking with Mehana Ma'a and Marlee Nunley picking up 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Ma'a added 11 digs, with a couple impressive rally saves.
As a team CSUSB hit .388, going .464 in the first set. The Yotes served nine aces with Cardoza and Clarke accounting for three each.
"Our serve and recieve was excellent today," Cardoza said. "I am really happy with how we played as a team and the results we got today."
