LA JOLLA – A match that was tied into the 85
th minute did not go No. 13 CSUSB's way on Friday afternoon, as they fell 0-2 to No. 3 Cal State LA in the CCAA Semifinals from the campus of UCSD.
The Yotes fired eight shots, but were able to just get one on frame. That came off the foot of
Jesus Ortega in the 46
th minute.
Kevin Aguilar did have a great look in the 59
th minute when his shot sailed just wide left. The Golden Eagles struck again in the 87
th minute on a counter.
As expected the match was intense and physical, with 27 fouls and five yellow cards. Neither team was able to take advantage of their set pieces.
"We felt like we had our moments," CSUSB head coach
Darren Leslie said. "But unfortunately we were not as clinical as we needed to be in those moments. We are in a position to possibly to host an NCAA Tournament match and we are excited about that opportunity."
For the Yotes the season is far from over, as they will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. They currently sit fourth in NCAA Super Region 4 and those final standings will be released at 3:30 pm on Monday on NCAA.com. If the Yotes remain in the top four they will host a NCAA Regional Match on Saturday, November 23. Follow all the updates on CSUSBathletics.com and the CSUSB Social Channels.
