POMONA – The No. 5-seeded CSUSB Coyotes earned a result for the ages on Saturday night, defeating No. 4-seeded Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 on the road in the NCAA Tournament Second Round for the first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
Entering the tournament for the fourth time, the Yotes made their mark early with a goal from
Brandon Sangbarani in the sixth minute off a setup and header from
Isaac Balderrama and
Francisco Sierra.
The Yotes locked it down on the defensive end from there, giving up 23 shots in the match to the Broncos, arguably the hottest team in the West, but allowing just 10 on target and keeper
Jacob Huber was up for the task on every one, earning his 11
th shutout of the season.
"I knew what I had to do and my defenders helped me out a ton back there," Huber said.
The Yotes needed just the one shot on target to win the match and avenge their loss at Pomona earlier in the year.
"We knew our best chance to win the match was to limit their chances and sit deep and defend," head coach
Darren Leslie said. "We won the ball in our deep defensive positions and then pushed forward quickly."
The Coyotes move on to face eighth-seeded Colorado School of Mines who upset No. 1 Azusa Pacific 2-1 on Saturday night. The match will be played at Cal State LA. Time and date to be updated soon on CSUSBathletics.com.
