LOS ANGELES – In a highly competative match, the No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes downed No. 24 Cal State LA on their home floor, 3-1, on Friday Night.
The Yotes took set one, 25-17, but Cal State LA took set two, 25-22. The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead in set three and won 25-20. In set four, it was back and forth late, but a block from
Jalyn Hayes and a kill from
Alexis Cardoza saw the Yotes score two-straight to win.
Cardoza's 26 kills were a season high and one short of her career high. The Yotes hit .295 and led in blocks, 13-8.
Stephanie Doak added eight kills and
Moira Murphy had six as did
Lydia Morohunfola. Cardoza was just unstoppable, hitting .478 with just four errors in 46 attempts. She added 10 digs, as
Leilia To'omalatai had 16 and
Asia Clarke had nine. Hayes controlled the net with six block assists and four solo blocks.
"This is such a great win for us, especially considering it was at their place," head coach
Kim Cherniss said. "LA is a very physical team and I cannot say enough about the job
Jalyn Hayes did at the net defensively and Leilia To'malatai defensively at left back. The really had a huge impact. Also, I know we get used to her putting up big numbers, but Alexis' performance tonight was really special. It is not very often you see an outside hitter taking that many swings and hitting that percentage. They just didn't have an answer for that."
Marlee Nunley and
Mehana Ma'a ran the offense with 21 and 18 assists, respectively. The Coyotes improved to 20-0, winning 20 games for the 23
rd-straight season. They will travel to Cal State Dominguez Hills tomorrow at 7 pm. Live links are at CSUSBathletics.com.
