LA JOLLA – A pair of first half goals fueled No. 18 CSUSB to a 2-0 win at UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon. It marked the first win on the road against the Tritons since 2009 for the Yotes.
Francisco Sierra got the Yotes on the board just 14 minutes in on an assist from Jonathan Garcia. Jesus Ortega scored unassisted in the 37th minute to make it 2-0 CSUSB.
Both defenses were stingy with just five total shots on goal, three coming from CSUSB. Jacob Huber made two saves for the Yotes to earn his second shutout of the week.
"The first 45 minutes today were the best I have seen us move the ball this season," head coach Darren Leslie said. "We were comfortable in possession and able to build three to four very good scoring opportunities. We lost our rhythm a little in the second half and dodged a couple bullets. But once we were able to get our foot on the ball again we found that rhythm again over the final 15 minutes and could have finished with a couple more goals. All in all, a good weekend on the road. Now we will rest for a day before beginning preparations for next week.
CSUSB went 2-0 on the road on the week and will stay out, traveling to Stanislaus State on Friday for a 4:30 pm match. Live links are on CSUSBathletics.com.
