SAN MARCOS – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes seized back control in a big way on Friday night, dropping set one 27-29 to CSU San Marcos, but taking the next three, 25-18, 25-14, and 25-16.
The Yotes hit .300+ in the final three sets including hitting .500 in the final set. Alexis Cardoza rattled off 17 kills, Stephanie Doak added 12 and Sascha Dominique had 11. Asia Clarke served four aces and the Yotes led in blocks 14-6, with Lydia Morohunfola sending seven, Moira Murphy getting five and Dominique getting four.
Marlee Nunley had 26 assists, Mehana Ma'a had 25, and Leilia To'omalatai dug 18 balls, with Ma'a recording 13 and Cardoza getting the double-double with 12.
"We are always happy to get a CCAA road win and tonight CSU San Marcos came out strong and we responded with a bit of hesitation, which is uncharacteristic for us," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "I was really proud of our group for regrouping and putting together three really solid sets after that. Leilia was amazing for us in first contact tonight and Sascha and Lydia both patrolled the net with amazing prowess, touching a lot of balls and blocking many for points. All in all, it was a great win for us."
The Yotes served 10 aces and Dominique, the national leader in hitting percentage, hit .529 on the night with just two errors.
CSUSB (15-0, 8-0 CCAA) will face UC San Diego at 7 pm tomorrow night live on ESPN 3. The direct link is on CSUSBathletics.com.
