LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 2 CSUSB Coyotes faced their biggest test of the CCAA season so far on Friday night, with a road trip to No. 16 Cal State LA. The result was a similar one as the Coyotes won in sweeping fashion, 3-0.
Alexis Cardoza led the way with 13 kills hitting .297, while Sascha Dominique and Hailey Jackson supplied nine kills each from the middle, both hitting above .440. Jayann DeHoog had 35 assists and 10 digs and Leilia To'omalatai led with 12 digs. CSUSB hit .280 as a team, hitting above .300 in the first two sets, and held CSULA to .175 on the night.
Midway through set one the Coyotes went on a three-point run to turn a 12-8 lead into a 15-8 lead, capped by a block from Jackson. The lead grew as big as 10, 22-12, on an ace from Jackson and ended 25-16. The Yotes were up again early in set two, 10-5, and back-to-back kills from Cardoza made it 18-10. CSUSB took it 25-19. CSULA led 18-12 in set three, but the Coyotes started stringing runs together and a block from Jackson and Cardoza helped tie it at 23. CSULA got to set point, but CSUSB finished with three-straight finalized by a block from Jackson and Mikaela Grove.
"Tonight was a great win and I am so proud of our team for the amount of grit they showed in that third set comeback," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "Both our middles, Hailey and Sascha, were dominant tonight, both in their offensive threat and defensive presence at the net. Leilia and Hannah (Barrett) were relentless on defense which pressured the opponent in their attack choices."
The aforementioned dominance at the net saw the Coyotes lead in blocks 8-3 with Jackson recording six to lead the way.
The Coyotes (15-1, 8-0) handed Cal State LA their first loss of the year and remain on the road tomorrow at CSU Dominguez Hills for a 5 pm start. Live links are available at csusbathletics.com.
