SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 2 ranked CSUSB Coyotes put together possibly their most impressive performance of the year, as they vanquished local rival No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday night in three sets inside Coussoulis Arena.
The first two sets were especially close but the Coyotes rose to the occasion every time it was needed. Hailey Jackson and Alexis Cardoza led the charge with 11 kills each, and Mikaela Grove gave a great push with seven kills hitting .417. Sascha Dominique controlled stretches of the match at the net and finished with six kills. Jayann DeHoog had another outstanding night with 35 assists and two aces. Asia Clarke was a defensive star with 15 digs.
"I'm very proud of our team for a win tonight against a very tough defensive opponent like Cal Poly Pomona," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "I thought we showed great discipline in sustaining rallies to be able to win the point. We also did a great job in serve and pass, dialing up six service aces against the team that leads our conference in not allowing them. We had zero reception errors on our side of the net, no doubt a key in the victory."
The first set was back and forth until CSUSB rattled off three-straight to go up 12-8 and led 17-11 before CPP started chipping away. The Broncos tied at 20 threatening to steal the set, but a kill from Dominique and ace from Clarke helped lead to the 25-23 win. The Coyotes had a rough start to set two, falling down 6-1, but they immediately got to work on the comeback tying the set at seven. Cal Poly led the back and forth set most the way before CSUSB took the last three points to win 25-23. The Coyotes used all that momentum and energy from the crowd to dominate set three in a 25-16 win that they took control of with a six-point and five-point run.
The Coyotes (14-1, 7-0 CCAA), winners of 10-straight matches, are back on the road later this week, beginning with No. 16 Cal State LA on Friday night at 7 pm. Live links are available at csusbathletics.com.
