SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 5 CSUSB Coyotes dominated in three sets and let a close set slip in a 3-1 win over CSU San Marcos inside Coussoulis Arena on Friday night.
The Coyotes won their sets going away, 25-12, 25-16, and 25-14 in the first, third, and fourth games. CSUSB hit .303 holding the Cougars to a .061 hitting percentage. The Coyotes only committed 18 errors and four or less in the sets they won.
Alexis Cardoza led CSUSB with 19 kills, while Asia Clarke and Hailey Jackson joined her in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively. Sascha Dominique led with eight blocks and Jayann DeHoog had the offense rolling once again with 42 assists. Leilia To'omalatai tallied 16 digs to lead the squad.
"I am very proud of our team for keeping their composure tonight and focusing on great execution," CSUSB head coach Kim Cherniss said. "Jayann DeHood executed our offense to perfection and fed our middles on a consistent basis. To accomplish that we needed to pass and serve well and we won that battle, which in the end enabled us to win this match. The credit goes to the whole team."
In the first set leading 10-8, the Coyotes rattled off six-straight with two blocks from Dominique in that stretch to seize control of the set. They were not able to grab set point in set two, but allowed the Cougars to get no closer than three points before running away with final six points in set three capped by a kill from Jackson. It was a seven-point run in set four with kills from Cardoza, Clarke, and Jackson to put the game away.
