SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – After a little slow start, it was full steam ahead for the No. 8 CSUSB Coyotes on Saturday night, taking a three-set sweep over Sonoma State inside Coussoulis Arena.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but the Coyotes didn't panic and methodically put themselves back in the set. The biggest push came from a three-point run capped by an ace from Asia Clarke and a four-point jump with two kills from Alexis Cardoza to square it at 12. CSUSB led 17-16 and took eight of the last nine points to win 25-17.
"We have a veteran group of players on the court who trust each other, so for them it was not a panic moment," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "It was a call to action and they right the ship most of the time in those scenarios."
The Coyotes went on to dominate the second and third sets, 25-14 and 25-15. Cardoza led the charge with 12 kills hitting .600 and Clarke and Sascha Dominique were right behind with eight kills each. Hailey Jackson hit .571 with nine kills in the middle and Jayann DeHoog added 34 assists with five digs and a kill. CSUSB hit .462 as a team and .500 in the final set, while holding SSU to .100 on the match. The Coyotes also led in blocks, 7.5 to three with Jackson and Cardoza getting a piece of four each.
The Coyotes sideout percentage remained above 60% all night, finishing at 66%, while Sonoma State was below 50% all night and finished at 41%.
CSUSB continues the homestand next weekend with Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego coming to town on Friday and Saturday. Live links are available at csusbathletics.com.
