SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 8 CSU San Bernardino Coyotes had a quick night in their 2018 home opener, winning in three sets over Humboldt State on Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.
They moved quickly through the sets, 25-11, 25-13, and 25-10. Alexis Cardoza led the attack with 13 kills, hitting .429, with Jayann DeHoog dishing 37 assists. Asia Clarke had eight kills hitting .538 and Hailey Jackson was a perfect six-for-six on the attack. The Coyotes hit .521 as a team and held HSU to .075 with 7.5 blocks to four.
CSUSB held Humboldt State off by five points or so early in set one, but finished on a 7-0 run with Hannah Barrett on the serve. The Yotes used a 5-0 spurt in the second set to go up 15-6 and added three more to that lead winning 25-13. They built a commanding 12-5 edge early in set three and a five-point run with Nicole Tabuena on the serve led to the 25-10 win.
Balance was the key for CSUSB with 10 players recording kills and eight of them hitting above .300. Digs were balanced as well, with 29 total to 15 for HSU, and Clarke and Jalyn Hayes led with four block assists each.
