Defense Leads No 1 Coyotes Over Cougars

Eight blocks for CSUSB to two for CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes remained perfect in CCAA action on Saturday night, sweeping Cal State San Marcos in three sets on the road.

It was another big night for Alexis Cardoza, as she hit .275 with 16 kills.  She was supported by Sascha Dominique's eight kills with just one error.  Jayann DeHoog dished 38 assists.  Cardoza added 14 digs and Leilia To'omalatai led the way in that category with 15.  The big difference in the night was CSUSB's eight blocks, led by Dominique with four, as CSUSM only had two as a team.

"Our team played lights out defense tonight," head coach Kim Cherniss said.  "We defended at a level that allowed our offense to flourish, which was nice.  Our one-two punch of Hailey Jackson and Sascha in the middle was highly effective tonight."

Jackson was perfect on the night with seven kills and no errors.  The Coyotes built a five-point lead early in set one that they extended to 23-12 with a late five-point run.  They finished it 25-17.  The Cougars led early in set two, but by the midway point CSUSB had built a three-point edge.  CSUSM came back to tie at 23, but back-to-back kills from Cardoza and Asia Clarke ended the set 26-24.  The Coyotes came right out of the gate in set three, going up 17-8, and cruising to the 25-16 win.

After a stretch of five matches in two weeks, the Coyotes (18-1, 11-0 CCAA) only have one next week, traveling to No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at 7 pm.
