POMONA, Calif. – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes took their first CCAA loss of the season on Friday night at Cal Poly Pomona, 3-1.
The Broncos took the first two sets, CSUSB fought back to take the third, but CPP won the fourth set 25-22. CSUSB hit .230 on the night while CPP hit .306. The Coyotes led in blocks, 7-5, but CPP had 10 more digs and 10 more kills. Alexis Cardoza led the Coyotes in kills (20), aces, (2), and blocks (2). Hailey Jackson added 10 kills and Hero Sports National Player of the Week Jayann DeHoog had 48 assists.
CPP built an early lead in set one and CSUSB got within three, but fell 25-17. Set two was similar in that the Broncos led early again and CSUSB got within four but fell 25-21. Set three was back and forth early but the Coyotes were able to build a 15-12 lead on a kill from Cardoza and ace from Hannah Barrett. The lead grew as wide as five and CSUSB won 25-22. In set four, the Coyotes had their chance to force a fifth set with the score knotted at 20, but CPP took five of the last seven points to win 25-22.
"Cal Poly Pomona played well on their home court, which is to be expected," head coach Kim Cherniss said. "However, we were uncharacteristically high in our errors from the service line and in serve receive, which greatly reduces our chances of winning the match."
The Coyotes (18-2, 11-1 CCAA) had nine service errors on the night. They are off tomorrow and return home next Friday to play San Francisco State at 7 pm. Live links are available on csusbathletics.com.
