ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Sept. 7, 2017) — No. 11 CSUSB, led by
Lauren Nicholson's 16 kills, was dealt a 3-1 loss to No. 15 Concordia (25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 21-25) during the first-day of play at the Division II West Region Showcase, played at the University of Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night.
After taking the first set on an impressive .333 attack percentage (11/3/24), the Coyotes (3-2) could not get over the hump in the four-set loss to the Eagles (4-0). Thirteen ties and five lead changes in the final three sets curtailed any type of momentum needed for CSUSB to get an edge.
Hailey Jackson joined Nicholson in double figures in kills with 11. CSUSB hit .207 on 46 kills, 18 errors in 135 attacks. Freshman
Lydia Morohunfola and
Sascha Dominique each six kills. Freshman setter
Diana Maile had 30 assist, with Jackson,
Alexis Cardoza,
Hannah Barrett and
Leilia To'omalatai all with two service aces.
CSUSB had 54 digs with Nicholson and Maile with 11 each and To'omalatai with 10.
Nicholson totaled 17.5 points that included three block assists.
"CUI played very well tonight,'' head coach
Kim Cherniss said. "Unfortunately, we did not pass well enough to put pressure on them offensively. Lauren and Hailey were very good offensively, but we just didn't get the ball to them consistently enough.''
CSUSB takes on Western Washington, a 3-0 loser to California Baptist on Wednesday. The Coyotes and Vikings play at 11 a.m. PDT Friday.
